Bring the Challenge to Life

The Hurdlestone Challenge doesn’t just happen. It’s built, safeguarded and energised by a dedicated team of adults who keep the event running smoothly from the moment the first tent peg hits the ground. If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves, support hundreds of young people and enjoy an unforgettable long weekend, Hurdlestone’s Campsite Crew is where you belong.

What the role involves?

The job of the Campsite Crew is to be the ones on-site that make things happen. You’ll work alongside the Campsite Crew Lead, members of the Committee and our vital Service Crew to make sure the challenge runs smoothly for the Young People and Adult Leaders attending.

You’ll support the event in a wide range of hands-on duties, including:

  • Setting up and striking the main campsite

  • Supporting car parking and site security

  • Keeping the campsite tidy and safe

  • Helping prepare and set up activity bases

  • Manning activity bases during the event

  • Assisting teams, leaders and committee members as needed

This is in no way an exhaustive list, and if you have a particular skill-set you think you could bring to the team - we’re very open to additional help in any areas (such as photography, admin, minibus driving or activity permits).

Why its worth it?

Volunteering as Campsite Crew is a great experience and opportunity to:

  • Make a tangible impact by creating the space where the entire Hurdlestone Challenge happens.

  • Gain practical experience in event operations, teamwork and problem-solving.

  • Build connections with volunteers from across Scouting and Girlguiding.

  • Be part of the heartbeat of the event, seeing behind the scenes and contributing directly to its success.

  • HAVE FUN! It’s not all work, we make sure our Campsite Crew get a chance to let their hair down too! We usually arrange a group takeaway on one evening, the Hurdlestone disco is just there… and we try to group people together with their friends for taskings, where possible.

This is meaningful, energising work where every hour you give helps hundreds of young people have an incredible experience.

Who Can Join?

To join the Campsite Crew, you must:

• Be 18 or over at the time of the Challenge

• Be a Network member or adult leader in Scouting or an Inspire member, adult leader, or Trefoil Guild member in Girlguiding

You do not need to be attending with a Troop or Unit.

In fact, you can join the Crew entirely as an individual. Campsite Crew members are not included in Troop/Unit ratios and have no responsibility for supervising under-18s, allowing you to focus fully on your crew responsibilities.

Your Availability

Ideally, Campsite Crew members are available from Wednesday to Sunday, supporting the full setup, event period and strike. But if you can only commit part-time, you are still very welcome. Your contribution matters, no matter the size. We’ll confirm your availability closer to the event.
